Judging Process:
The process will be the same for each skill level. Judging will begin with he Novice level and continue to Expert. Note: Winning photos (1st, 2nd, 3rd and HM) from previous Club competitions are not acceptable.
- Each Image will be previewed for the judges by projection on a screen. No titles will be announced at this time.
- During the second pass of the images, titles will be shown and announced. Each Judge will hold up a scorecard (1-9...with 9 being the best) for each image. Therefore each has a maximum score of 27.
- Judges will be allowed, but not required, to comment on any photograph during the competition, after scoring is announced.
- If a tie occurs, the Judges will break the ties by review.
- At the conclusion of each level, the Judges will comment on all winning selections.
- All ribbons will be awarded at the close of the competition.
Scoring Criteria:
Each print will be evaluated according to three separate criteria categories. Think about these three items when you look at your own photo and see if you feel it does well with each criteria. (It's a good idea to think of these three items each time you take a photo, too).
- Technical Merit: Technical merit criteria include proper focus, exposure, film type vs. lighting, blurring, and image levelness.
- Composition: Composition criteria include general composition effectiveness, positioning of major image elements, use of ambient and artificial lighting, and the presence of unwanted or distracting picture elements
- Interest - (Eye Appeal/Storytelling): Interest scores include the clarity, strength and effectiveness of the photographer's visual statement.
Scoring Method:
- There will be 3 Judges. Judges will be 3 composite of PCoB members, members of other clubs or otherwise qualified individuals.
- Each judge will score between 1 and 9 per photo (giving 3 points to each category. Maximum total point per print = 27
- Judges votes will be calculated while they comment on the print and the total number of points per print will be announced before the next print is displayed.
- Competition results will be posted on the website and, after our next competition; cumulative scores for each member will be posted.
Awards:
Winners will be awarded 1st, 2nd, 3rd and Honorable Mentions for each skill level. If there are less than 20 entries in any one level, a 20% rule will be applied in this instance. For example, Expert has only 10 prints entered...20% of 10 prints = 2 awards. Therefore, in this example, there will only be a 1st and 2nd place awarded to this level.
