The History of the Photography Club of Beaufort

In April of 2005, a group of photographers met with the idea of setting up the Photography Club of Beaufort. The first public announcement was in the April 11th edition of the Island Packet:.

Since that time, the club has grown in number and in stature, attracting photographers of all skill levels from novice to working professionals.

Meetings are now held on the second Monday of the month with a very active membership. The club has entered into many competitions and has walked away with its share of awards. There is active participation in club activities including workshops, photo critiques and field trips.

PCoB also is active in the community and has done numerous community events throughout the Lowcountry area. Some of these activities include:

Club members have photographed Alzheimer patients with their families or caregivers for Alzheimer Family Services of Beaufort. The photograph they were given helps the patient have a tangible reminder of their family.

Club members photographed the families of deployed marines and for emailing at Christmas.

In 2007 and 2008 we offered programs on How to Take Better Pictures at the Beaufort Library and its branches.

Members donated 29 pieces of artwork to be permanently on exhibit at Veterans Victory House in Walterboro. Club members cooperated with the other art associations in Beaufort County (Beaufort Art Association, Camera Club of Hilton Head, Society of Bluffton Artists, Sun City Art Club, Sun City Photography Club, Hilton Head Art League) and, in total, the groups contributed 240 pieces to beautify the bare walls of the facility. Each year the Photography Club of Beaufort awards prizes for the best nature photograph submitted by area high school students.  This award is given in memory of Dale Westcott, a former member of our club who died in 2005.  For more information about the Dale Wescott Award, please click here.
